SANDLIN STATEMENT ON ONE WEEK FARM BILL EXTENSION
Washington, D.C., April 24, 2008 – U.S.
Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin commented today on House and Senate approval
of a one-week extension of the 2002 Farm Bill as details are finalized
on that legislation’s reauthorization:
“The passage of a one-week extension of the 2002 Farm Bill in the House
and the Senate is another important step forward in what has proven
to be a lengthy process. However, it appears discussions over the last
48 hours have been productive and we are in the final stages. Key funding
negotiators said this morning that they expect conferees will get the
farm bill completed by the end of the week, but another short-term extension
of the 2002 Farm Bill is needed to finalize the details. Negotiators
are waiting on Congressional Budget Office estimates of the funding
mechanisms that are on the table.
“Again, I continue to believe that we should work toward a new bill
yet this year. I don’t think a one year extension of the current farm
bill, as the President has suggested, is in the best interests of our
agricultural producers and rural communities, I remain optimistic that
we can reach final agreement very soon.”
