Common Sense Investment in Water Projects Important to South Dakota
November
6, 2007, Washington, D.C. -
U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth joined a wide, bipartisan majority today
in voting to override President George W. Bush’s veto of the Water Resources
Development Act of 2007. The House of Representatives voted 361-54,
a sufficient majority to override the President’s veto. The Water Resources
Development Act, or WRDA, authorizes Army Corps of Engineers water projects
across the country, including important projects in South Dakota.
Herseth Sandlin
said, “This is common sense investment in water infrastructure, including
resources for critical projects in our state.” Herseth Sandlin noted
that the WRDA bill would provide funds for an upgrade of Mni Waste,
the water project serving thousands of families in the Cheyenne River
Sioux Tribe. She said, “A clean, safe, reliable source of drinking water
is an essential building block not only for an adequate level of public
health but for economic development and growth.”
Additionally, she
noted that the bill will improve shipping options for agricultural producers,
as it authorizes $3.6 billion for a system of new locks and dams along
the Upper Mississippi. The bill also provides authorization for funds
to evaluate and improve existing Corps flood control projects.
The Senate is expected
to take up the override vote later this week. Earlier this year, the
Senate passed the WRDA bill 81-12.
