from Rep. Stephanie Herseth HERSETH COMMENT ON BSE POSITIVE TEST RESULT March 13, 2006, Washington, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth commented today following news of a positive result on a "Western blot confirmatory test" for BSE conducted by USDA. The positive test result followed preliminary inconclusive findings on a non-ambulatory animal on a farm in Alabama. Herseth said, "Despite this positive result, our beef supply remains the safest in the world. USDA officials are working to determine the origin and feed history of this particular animal, and I am optimistic that this investigation will demonstrate the effectiveness of our existing prevention and inspection protocol. "I must add, however, that Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling would be an invaluable tool to add transparency and efficiency to our efforts to prevent BSE." Herseth added that the animal in question never entered the animal or human food chains, and said, "There is no reason our trading partners shouldn't continue to have the highest confidence in our ability to detect and prevent BSE from entering our beef supply." # # #
