I believe Congress should do more to improve newborn and maternal health across the globe. Approximately 3.7 million children under the age of four weeks perish each year, and 500,000 women die annually because of complications with a pregnancy. Low-cost and proven techniques such as improved training of birth attendants and clean birthing environments would have large effects on improving newborn and maternal health, as would better access to clean water and proper nutrition.
