HERSETH SANDLIN TO SPEAK AT WHITE HOUSE TRIBAL NATIONS CONFERENCE
Washington, DC {November 4, 2009}- On Thursday, Rep. Herseth Sandlin will speak at the White House Tribal Nations Conference. Recognized for her leadership in supporting efforts to improve law and order in Indian Country, Rep. Herseth Sandlin will be speaking on the Public Safety and Housing panel to be held from 1:45-3:00 P.M. Eastern Time in the Sydney Yates auditorium at the Department of the Interior.
"One of my top priorities in Congress is improving public safety in Indian Country," Rep. Herseth Sandlin. "This summit is an important part of our efforts to address critical needs on reservations in South Dakota and across the country and I'm honored to be participating in this historic event."
In the 111th Congress, Rep. Herseth Sandlin has reintroduced the Tribal Law and Order Act. This legislation would improve coordination between tribal, state and federal law enforcement agencies and increase accountability standards. Senator Byron Dorgan, chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, (D-ND) introduced nearly identical legislation in the Senate. This legislation was recently endorsed by United States Attorney General Eric Holder in St. Paul last week at a Tribal Nations Listening Session.
