HERSETH SANDLIN ANNOUNCES $250,000 TRANSITIONAL HOUSING ASSISTANCE GRANT FOR WHITE BUFFALO CALF WOMAN SOCIETY

Washington, DC {September 29, 2009}- Today, Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin announced a $250,000 Transitional Housing Assistance grant for the White Buffalo Calf Woman Society, Inc. from the United States Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women (OVW). The Transitional Housing Assistance Grants program provides assistance to victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking who are homeless, or in need of transitional housing, or other housing assistance, including short-term housing assistance and supportive services. White Buffalo Calf Woman Society, Inc. is located in Mission and has been working with women, men, and children on the Rosebud Reservation and surrounding areas since 1977.

“Helping victims leave a dangerous situation and establish a safe environment for themselves and their families is critical to ending the tragic cycle of domestic violence and sexual assault,” said Rep. Herseth Sandlin. “This funding assists the White Buffalo Calf Woman Society in the important work they do to provide victims with an opportunity for a fresh start.”

The Transitional Housing Assistance Grants for Victims of Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Stalking, or Sexual Assault Program focuses on a holistic, victim-centered approach to provide transitional housing services that move individuals into permanent housing. Funds from this program must be used to support programs that: provide transitional housing; provide short-term housing assistance; and/or provide support services designed to enable individuals who are fleeing domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking to locate and secure permanent housing and integrate into a community by providing those individuals with services such as transportation, counseling, child care services, case management, employment counseling, and other assistance.
