HERSETH SANDLIN ANNOUNCES $228,086 TRANSITIONAL HOUSING ASSISTANCE GRANT FOR NATIVE AMERICAN COMMUNITY BOARD
Washington, DC {September 29, 2009}- Today, Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin announced a $228,086 transitional housing assistance grant for the Native American Community Board Inc. in Lake Andes from the United States Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women (OVW). The Transitional Housing Assistance Grants provides assistance to victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking, who are homeless, or in need of transitional housing, or other housing assistance, including short-term housing assistance and supportive services. "With this funding, the Native American Community Board will enhance their ability to assist victims of sexual assault and domestic violence in finding a safe place to recover and start anew," Rep. Herseth Sandlin said
The Native American Community Board (NACB) was founded in 1985 to address issues of health, education, land and water rights, and economic development of Native American people. In February of 1988, the NACB opened the Native American Women's Health Education Resource Center.
The Transitional Housing Assistance Grants for Victims of Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Stalking, or Sexual Assault Program focuses on a holistic, victim-centered approach to provide transitional housing services that move individuals into permanent housing. Funds from this program must be used to support programs that: provide transitional housing; provide short-term housing assistance; and/or provide support services designed to enable individuals who are fleeing domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking to locate and secure permanent housing and integrate into a community by providing those individuals with services such as transportation, counseling, child care services, case management, employment counseling, and other assistance.
