REP. HERSETH ANNOUNCES HILL CITY FIELD HEARING ON FOREST ISSUES

Forests and Forest Health Subcommittee Chairman Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR) to Join Herseth and Local Officials to Discuss Forest Policy

August 24, 2005, Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth announced today that the House of Representatives' Subcommittee on Forests and Forest Health will be holding a hearing in Hill City, SD on issues affecting the health and management of Black Hills National Forest. The meeting will be held in the Hill City High School Theater, 421 Main Street, at 9:00am on Wednesday, August 31, 2005. Media and the general public are welcome.

Herseth, who serves on the Resources Committee and its Subcommittee on Forests and Forest Health, will be joined by that Subcommittee’s Chairman Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR).

Herseth said, “This is a terrific opportunity to shine a spotlight on important issues surrounding Black Hills National Forest including forest health and wildfire prevention. Ensuring appropriate forest policy is essential not only to preserving South Dakota’s wonderful natural resources, but to our tourism and economy as well.”

“Listening and learning from this hearing will help develop policy to support those who manage our forests, make their living on the land, and enjoy recreating within our national treasures, including Black Hills National Forest" said Subcommittee Chairman Walden. "I am working closely with Congresswoman Herseth and other Forest Subcommittee members as we continue to examine issues critical to forest health.”

The Subcommittee will examine a number of issues including implementation of the Healthy Forests Restoration Act on National Forest System lands.
