News from U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth Herseth Statement on Selection of Homestake Mine as One of Two Finalists for Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory July 21, 2005, Washington, D.C. – Reacting to today’s announcement, Rep. Herseth said, “The selection of Homestake mine as one of two finalists is terrific news for the Black Hills region, and the entire state. We know now that the National Science Foundation is serious about building a Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory, and that they recognize that Homestake is an excellent candidate site. My staff and I will continue to work closely with officials in South Dakota as the selection process moves into the next phase to ensure that the National Science Foundation has all the information it needs to make its decision.” Herseth added, “I extend my congratulations and gratitude to everyone in the Black Hills who has been working so hard on this project, which has the potential to have a tremendous economic impact on the region.” #
